At Eboracum Candles, we have always taken pride in creating fragrances and vessels that tell a story. This year, we had the honour of capturing one of York’s most iconic stories in wax and flame. We are delighted to share the journey behind our fully bespoke candle, created exclusively for The Grand, York—the city’s only five-star hotel and a landmark of heritage, luxury, and timeless elegance.
A Hotel Steeped in History
The Grand is a masterpiece of architecture and opulence. Originally built in 1906 as the imposing headquarters for the North Eastern Railway (NER), it was designed by William Bell and Horace Field as a lavish "Palace of Business"—a physical statement of the NER’s prosperity and power. With its sweeping marble, rich oak interiors, and commanding presence, the building stood as one of the finest office structures in Britain.
Following a sensitive and meticulous restoration, The Grand was transformed into the luxury hotel we know today, retaining every bit of its historic grandeur. The story of the NER itself is woven deep into British railway history, having later merged into the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) in 1923. This remarkable heritage continues to shape the identity of the hotel and inspires all who walk through its doors.
Capturing History in Design
When The Grand approached us to create a bespoke candle, our goal was to honour its history through thoughtful craftsmanship. The candle’s packaging features the hotel’s ornate symbol, the same distinguished symbol proudly displayed at the entrance of the building.
Each vessel is individually hot-stamped with luxurious gold foil, depicting the iconic layout of The Grand. This detail not only pays homage to the hotel’s historic architecture but also offers a tactile reminder of its enduring legacy.
