Eboracum Candles: Inspired by the Historic City of York

, by Lloyd Villanueva, 3 min reading time

Our business is proudly based in the beautiful and historic city of York—a place rich in heritage and character, and one we are honoured to call home. Every luxury candle we create is handcrafted right here in the city, and we are passionate about creating something special that is inspired by York.

Given York’s deep significance to everything we do, it was only natural that our company name should reflect this magnificent city.

The Story Behind the Name: Eboracum Candles

Choosing the right name for our brand was no small task. We wanted something that embodied the quality and craftsmanship of our products—something prestigious, memorable, and meaningful. After much thought, we found the perfect inspiration in York’s Roman heritage and named our company Eboracum Candles.

What is the Connection Between Eboracum and York?

To uncover the origins of Eboracum, we must travel back in time to around 71 AD, when the Romans first invaded Britain. Recognising the strategic importance of the land where the River Foss meets the River Ouse, they built a fortress on the banks of the Ouse. This fort, and the town that grew around it, was named Eboracum—the very foundation of the city we now know as York.

What Does Eboracum Mean?

The true meaning of Eboracum remains a mystery, but there are two prevailing theories. One suggests that the name derives from the presence of yew trees in the area, as Eboracum is thought to mean ‘place of the yew trees’. To this day, yew trees can still be found growing in and around York, lending weight to this idea.

Another theory links the name to King Ebrascus, who is believed to have founded the city. According to this interpretation, Eboracum translates to ‘Estate of Eboros’. While the exact origin remains uncertain, what is undeniable is the lasting legacy of York’s Roman past.

A Roman Legacy and a City Steeped in History

Though the Romans departed Eboracum around 410 AD, they left behind a thriving settlement that would grow into the York we know today—a city that continues to attract visitors from around the world.

Exploring York is like stepping back in time. Walk along the ancient Roman walls, and you are retracing the steps of those who built and defended this great city. For those keen to dive deeper into York’s past, the city offers a wealth of historical attractions, from the Jorvik Viking Centre and York Castle Museum to the Roman Baths and the breathtaking York Minster.

But history isn’t confined to museums—York’s streets are filled with hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Strolling through the Shambles or Museum Gardens, you can’t help but feel connected to the centuries of history that shaped this extraordinary city.
